PEG-g-hollow silica vesicles were obtained by grafting PEG to nanosized hollow silica. The successful PEG grafting was verified using TGA, NMR, FTIR and TEM. DLLS reflected that PEG-g-hollow silica vesicles have a good dispersity in aqueous solution without aggregation and a good stability. Also the capability of PEG-g-hollow silica vesicles to enter cells was shown using confocal microscopy. Anti-cancer drug palitaxel (PTX) was loaded into PEG-g-hollow silica vesicles, and PTX can be released faster from PEG-g-hollow silica vesicles than free PTX as reflected by HPLC results. In vitro results reflected that PTX loaded PEG-g-hollow silica vesicles are potent to kill cancer cells, but PEG-g-hollow silica vesicles show a low cytotoxicity.
