TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF A PLATE WITH PARTIAL CONSTRAINED LAYER DAMPING

This paper deals with an analytical model that discusses harmonic and transient responses of a plate with partial constrained layer damping (PCLD) due to an impact. The governing equation is obtained from the Lagrange's equations. The stiffness of the viscoelastic core is assumed to be complex and frequency dependent. The Prony series is used to account for core properties. The equation of motion is converted into the frequency domain using fast Fourier transform (FFT). Once solved, the transverse displacement obtained in the frequency domain is converted to the time domain with the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). Two validations are made; the first is done by comparing the natural frequencies of the plate with PCLD with results available from the literature. The second validation is done by plotting displacement due to an impact as a function of frequency and comparing the frequencies of the peaks to the natural frequencies of the plate with PCLD. Once the model is validated, some graphs of the transient response are plotted and discussed. This paper is part of an effort to build a parametric model for the study of acoustic radiation by a rectangular plate with PCLD under the influence of an impact.
