Environmentally Responsible Air Transport (ERAT) is a research project that addresses the ATM community's need to reduce the environmental impact per flight to allow for sustainable growth. The project is co-funded by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme, but due to its strong relation to the SESAR Work Programme, the technical supervision is conducted by SESAR Joint Undertaking. The ERAT project develops and validates concepts of operations (CONOPSs) for a medium and high density traffic airport. The chosen reference airports are Stockholm Arlanda and London Heathrow. The CONOPSs aim for reduced environmental impacts through increased efficiency of operations in the extended terminal area (eTMA) and by enabling Continuous Descent Approaches (CDAs) and Continuous Climb Departures (CCDs). The concepts are directly related to the ERAT SESAR members concept work to be undertaken in the SESAR Work Programme. The validation process involves real time simulations, for which advanced tools are developed. Key performance areas are environment, capacity and safety. The objective is to bring the validation and verification activities as close to the target operational environment as possible in the near future. ERAT started in November 2007 and is carried out by a consortium of 11 project partners: Airbus, DLR, Envisa, EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre, LFV, Lufthansa, National Company Bucharest Airports, NATS, NLR, Snecma and To70.
