A study on the Loudness Balance of Plucking Instrument Ensemble

Loudness imbalance is a serious problem in Chinese traditional orchestra, which needs to be solved for its orchestration. In this paper, the loudness balance of Chinese plucking instrument ensemble was studied based on listening test. Forty subjects aged from 20 to 30 years old with normal hearing listened to the mono test signals with headphone. Subjects adjusted the ratio of different plucking instruments until achieving the best loudness matching. The ratio of different plucking instruments with equal-loudness was calculated. According to analysis of listening test result and loudness level calculation, the subjective loudness balance ratio was different from equal-loudness ratio.
