A real-time turbidity monitoring and modelling system (RTMMS) is developed as a decision support tool for turbidity control in reservoir operations. The RTMMS consists of a real-time data acquisition system for collecting field data using CDMA wireless Internet connection, input data preparation module, a two dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality simulation model, and a post-processor to explore the simulation results. The system was calibrated and verified with experiment data in a reservoir, and applied to assess the effect of different selective withdrawal scenarios on the fate of turbidity plume. The RTMMS showed fairly satisfactory performance in replicating the water temperature profiles and turbidity distributions with efficient computation time. It can be effectively used to identify the temporal and spatial variations of reservoir turbidity, and to assist in the reservoir operations by providing in-time turbidity forecasting information.
