The design of longspan post-tensioned steel structures is outlined from first principles, using fundamental physics with assumptions drawn from Robert Hooke's and Antonio Gaudi's earlier work. Treatment of a structural form as a one-way catenary solution is discussed and then extended to a two way catenary net for shell structure applica tions. Further development of computational methods for analysis is outlined. The behaviour of post-tensioned steel solutions is explored,firstly from a linear static viewpoint and then taking into account second order behaviour. The beneficial effects of p-delta behaviour of this unique genre of structures are outlined The concept of pre-loading structural forms against imposed loads is introduced This covers, but is not limited to,wind loads,earthquake loads,crane loads and live loads. The construction methodology of post-tensioned steel structures is investigated with particular emphasis on the in extricable link to design and behaviour. Examples of both linear, two-way and shell structural forms are documented from my 25 years of experience in conceiving, designing and constructing structures in Asia and Australia. These structures span from 75m to in excess of 120m. New applications of the technology are described concentrating on their potential use in bridging,tower structures, ship building and high rise applications. The intellectual property associated with my designs is then described and the general economics of the solutions this property brings is explored Specific examples from industry are presented
