This paper describes a study into the possibility of using Japanese cedar as fire-protection for steel framed apartment building. Loaded fire resistance tests on three full-scale steel tube columns protected by cedar were carried out. The width of cross section of square steel tube is 400mm and the thickness is 16mm. The height of steel tube is 3500mm. The thickness of cedar plates is 60mm. The specimens were heated by the ISO 834 standard fire tempera ture curve. The heating time for specimens A and B was 60 minutes during the loaded fire resistance test The re sults of specimens A and B verified that steel tubes protected by cedar plates of 60mm thick satisfied the required 60-minute fire resistance rating according to the current Japanese regulations. The reasons for the collapse of speci men C were discussed and the thermal expansion of specimen C was simulated by calculation.
