Eight pepper cultivars from 4 different types, including pod, line, hot and sweet pepper, were used to analyze the salt and drought tolerance during seed germination. The results showed that the salt and drought tolerance of different cultivars could be classified separately by the three indexes, relative germination potentiality, relative germi-nation percentage and relative germination index, but the evaluating results were not completely consistency. Significant differences were observed be-tween different types of peppers. The salt tolerances of hot and sweet pepper were identified as the highest and the lowest respectively, and those of pod and line pepper as the intermediate; the line and hot pepper had the highest and the lowest drought tolerances respectively, and the pod and sweet pepper were intermediate. No marked correlativity between the salt tolerance and drought tolerance of pepper during seed germination was observed.
