Several modified styrene monomers containing phosphorus moieties as flame retarding groupshave been prepared and fully characterized. These have been utilized for the preparation of copolymers(5, 10, 20 weight percent) with styrene. The thermal properties of these polymers have been assessedusing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA). In particular, char yieldsfrom TGA suggest that the incorporation of phosphorus-containing units has good potential forimparting flame retardance.
