Development of the AH-64D Apache Longbow Integration with Unmanned Aircraft Systems

This paper will discuss the development and testing of the Apache Longbow AH-64D Level IV control of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). The technology which will be integrated into the Apache Longbow Block III aircraft began development in 1996 with an Internal Research and Development (IRAD) program. A prototype pilot vehicle interface (PVI) was developed based on functional analysis and used Apache Longbow Operational Flight Profile (OFP) Display Processor software. A virtual simulation study was conducted to assess the presentation, utility, and functionality of the design, as well as gain initial input into the concept of operations, tactics, techniques, and procedures. The results from the simulation study were positive for both the PVI and the manned-unmanned concept and lead to a prototype development effort. This paper will discuss the development and testing of the Apache Longbow Block III Level IV UAS interoperability program and review recent manned simulation tests to evaluate the usability of the integration. The Apache Longbow Level IV UAS control will be fielded on the Lot 1 Apache Longbow Block III in 2011 and holds promise to provide significant benefit to situational awareness and mission effectiveness.
