To enhance the anaerobic digestion pretreatment of waste activated sludge was donecombining three different ultrasound specific energy inputs (1000, 5,000, and 10,000 kJ kg-1 TS-1) and thermal pretreatment temperatures (50, 70 and 90oc). Prior to anaerobic digestion,combined pretreatments have significantly released extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)through sludge solubilisation. A maximum 46% increase in specific methane production (mlCH4/gm VSS added) was observed for sono-thermal combined pretreatment combining 10,000 kJkg-1 TS-1 specific energy input and 30 minutes thermal pretreatment at 90oc.
