THE EVALUATION OF ADHESIVE BOND PRIMERS FOR REPAIR BONDING OF ALUMINUM ALLOYS

The Air Force Research Laboratory’s Materials Integrity Branch (AFRL/RXSA) and theUniversity of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) are currently evaluating a number ofcommercially available adhesive bond primers for use with prebond surface preparations,primarily for repair bonding of aluminum alloys in aircraft structures. Currently used adhesiveprimers contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and/or hexavalent chromium that aredangerous to the environment and humans. Alternative adhesive primers under evaluation arechromium free and/or waterborne. These primers are being evaluated using several structuralepoxy film adhesives on aluminum treated with phosphoric acid anodize and sol-gel prebondsurface preparations. Testing includes tensile lap shear, metal-to-metal climbing drum peel, andbond environmental durability (wedge test). Initial results from this evaluation are presented.
