The #22 recovery furnace at Longview Fibre Co. was upgraded with a new model predictive control (MPC) package called MACS (Multivariable Advanced Control System) from Capstone Technology, Inc. The controller has reduced natural gas use for SO_2 control in this furnace and has helped eliminate plugging in the upper furnace. The controller is described and data is presented to show the benefits of its operation.
