The #22 recovery furnace at Longview Fibre Co. was upgraded with a new model predictive control (MPC) package called MACS (Multivariable Advanced Control System) from Capstone Technology, Inc. The controller has reduced natural gas use for SO2 control in this furnace and has helped eliminate plugging in the upper furnace. The controller is described and data is presented to show the benefits of its operation.
