Coherent Doppler LIDAR is beingutilized to develop a mobile wind speed measuringstation. We are building an all fiber based eye safelaser system to measure wind speed in urban areas. A1.5μ.m polarization maintained fiber optics masteroscillator power amplifier system is used, whichutilizes inexpensive telecommunication components.A heterodyne balanced detection is being used tosuppress the RIN noise. We have calculated theoptimum local oscillator power for maximum opticaldetector’s efficiency. Analog to digital conversion(ADC) will be performed at 400 MHZ by using a dataacquisition card with FPGA on board, which can beprogrammed to perform autocorrelation and/or FFTonboard for faster performance. This system can beused along with other units on top of high buildings inNew York City as a way of detecting wind speedprofile for Homeland security.
