Liquid double-core ferrocene derivatives (LDFDs), which have high content of iron, good plasticizing and anti-migration ability, is one kind of h igh-effective burning-rate modifiers in AP/Al/HTPB propellant. To develop the high burning-rate and insensitive AP/Al/HTPB propellant, two new LDFDs, ethylferrocenyl-ferrocenyl-methane (EDFM) and butylferrocenyl-ferrocenyl-methane (BDFM), which the iron content are higher than that of the widely used Catocene, have been designed and synthesized. The actions Catocene, EDFM and BDFM on the thermal decomposition characteristics and impact sensitivities of fine-AP powder were investigated by means of DSC and drop-weight method. The results showed that there were a low-temperature oxidation of LDFDs and thermal decomposition of fine-AP was greatly enhanced. The impact sensitivities of fine-AP/ EDFM or BDFM mixture were lower than that of fme-AP/Catocene mixture. The H_(50) of propellant slurry and cured propellant with EDFM were 57.5cm and 29.8cm respectively, which were much greater than that with Catocene (14.8cm/10.5cm). LDFDs enhanced the burning rate of AP/Al/HTPB propellants greatly. At 7MPa, the burning rate of the AP/Al/HTPB propellant with EDFM was 22.85mm/s, which is higher than that with Catocene (20.61mm/s). These results showed that EDFM is a newsafer and more effective burning-rate modifier of AP/Al/HTPB propellant.
