In order to solve the problems in numerical calculation of fluid-solid interaction (FSI) caused by fluid deformation when projectile penetrates into water, a finite element model was developed through experimentation by using ANSYS/ LS-DYNA software. The process in which a rod projectile penetrates water was simulated at a high velocity by applying an Arbitrary Lagrange-Euler (ALE) algorithm. The results show that the model is effectively solved several numerical problems. A higher penetration velocity leads to greater deformation and wear of projectile head and subsequently an increased rate of deceleration, due to hydrodynamic drag.
