Two series of experiments were conducted by RUAG, testing Swiss 50mm/50o charges at very long standoffs. The main goal of these experiments was to examine the behavior of the jet and the particles that are created during the particulation process. Examining the radial and rotational movements of the particles we found that the main cause for the decrease of the penetration and spread of the depth results with increasing standoff emanates from two mechanisms: the side radial movement of the fast and the rear parts of the jet. The longer the standoff the larger these parts are, up to the moment where all the jet is dispersed. According to this analysis, the drift model that takes into account only the radial movement of the whole jet and therefore calculates a cutoff velocity is an oversimplified engineering model that misses the real physical basis.
