RECONSTRUCTING FRAGMENT POSITIONS AND VELOCITIES IN WARHEAD ARENA TESTS USING FLASH X-RAY RADIOGRAPHY AND WITNESS PLATES

Flash X-ray radiography of dynamic warhead fragments, with a witness plate placed in the path of the fragments is often used to obtain velocity distribution data. This paper describes the geometrical setup and a technique for matching fragment shadows on the X-ray films with each other as well as with the corresponding holes in the witness plate. A method for three dimensional reconstruction of fragment trajectories is discussed.
