The initial stages of water and ethanol compressed by detonation products are tested by a shadow photography technique with a high speed rotating frame camera FJZ-250 in this paper. The photographs about interface between detonation products and water or ethanol are obtained clearly. Experimental results show that the evolvement of interface between detonation products and water has greatly difference compared to the evolvement of interface between detonation products and ethanol, there may be have phase change in ethanol under shock compression. Test is simulated using LS-DYNA. The results show numerical simulation about position and velocity of interface is accordant with the test. The phase change phenomena are analyzed by two methods. One is Walsh and Christian theoretical method. The second method is theoretically analyzed shock release process in water and ethanol. From the two methods mentioned above, it can be concluded that the phase change in ethanol can be easier than in water when they are shocked.
