An input-output model to quantitative the benefits of tourist airports on regional economy

The airport is a fundamental node of the air transport network provides accessibility to new markets and increases productivity for the region it is serving. According to ACI, airports are major economic assets offering major economic returns and benefits. A growing literature on this subject highlights the difficulties to calculate the effects of airports. This paper deals with the estimation of benefits of tourist airports on regional economy. The methodology approach is based on an input-output modelling approach to estimate the key categories of effects from the tourist airport. Conventional wisdom is to present a well organised modelling framework, appropriate for planners, managers and decision makers to quantitative the effects of tourism airports to regional economies. The application is a new airport of Heraklion in Crete island (Greece) which it is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in southeast Mediterranean.
