Traditional cultures could be taken as ideas resource by Chinese designers. A concept was put forward in this paper that the application of traditional cultures in product design could be divided into three layers. From outer to inner, the first layer is the direct application of traditional cultural visual icons on design. The second layer is reflecting Chinese manners and ways of thinking and the influences and functions on designs. The third layer is reflecting traditional philosophy and values of Chinese. Several design examples were presented to support this concept which could benefit Chinese industrial designers.
