A novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide ([Bmim]OH) electrolyte membrane has been prepared for application in alkaline direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). These anion exchange membrane with high conductivities has been prepared by doping [Bmim]OH and thereby hydroxyl groups into the polymer. The characteristic properties of the PVA/[Bmim]OH membrane have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), AC impedance and cyclic voltammetry. The results revealed that PVA/[Bmim]OH membrane exhibited superior thermal stability. The ionic conductivity of these membrane was found to be of the order of 10 -2 S/cm at ambient temperature.
