Some of the products made of high performance fibers are used under high stress. It is therefore necessary to evaluate the UV resistance of these high performance fibers under tensile stress. This paper studied the photodegradation of aramid 1414 fiber under tensile stress. The mechanical and structural properties of aramid 1414 were characterized by use of mechanical test, SEM and Infrared Spectrometry (FT-IR) measurements. The results showed that there were significant relations between the tensile strength retention and the time of light radiation. The combined action with tensile stress and light radiation easily caused decreasing of tensile strength. FT-IR showed photochemical scission caused and UV irradiation under tensile stress deteriorated the surface and defect areas of the fiber severely. It was found that stress accelerated degradation of fibers. The evaluation under tensile stress would better reflect the true performance of the products.
