CITATION ANALYSIS OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT RESEARCH

Several published studies have examined which journals publish the highest qualityoperations management (OM)-related research. This paper will examine if the perceived qualityof journals publishing OM-related research is changing. The authors use meta-analysis toexamine five recent OM journal ranking studies. This technique allows the authors to develop anewly combined OM journal ranking that minimizes the bias, actual or perceived, of past studies.This paper then reports the results from a citation analysis of three OM journals publishedbetween 1999 and 2005: International Journal of Operations and Production Management,Journal of Operations Management, and Production and Operations Management.Results show general agreement for three of the top five OM journals: Management Science,Journal of Operations Management, and Production and Operations Management. The currentcitation analyses included International Journal of Operations and Production Management andHarvard Business Review in the top five, whereas the meta-analysis contained OperationsResearch and Decision Sciences within the top five. The results also show a noticeable increasein the number of supply chain management journals recently cited by OM researchers. Theresults also show that OM research published in recent years increasingly seek insight fromresearch published by other business disciplines, while citations of research published inengineering journals have diminished significantly. However, the authors note the journals fromother business disciplines include few articles addressing OM research.
