@@Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for normal growth and development in both livestock and humans (Sunde,1997;McDowell,2003). Over the past few decades public and scientific perceptions of Se have dramatically changed;ranging from a nutrient that is potentially dangerous and should be controlled within narrow ranges to one that has many potential health benefits when provided at supranutritional,but nontoxic,levels.Much of this discussion can be attributed to recent work (Clark et al.,1996;Combs and Lu,2001) indicating that supranutritional levels of Se from yeast (2- to 4-fold above normal requirements) can reduce the combined incidence of lung,colorectal,and prostate cancers by as much as 50% in humans. Additionally,research using rodent cancer models has demonstrated that the positive response to supranutritional (2 to 3mg kg-1DM) levels of Se may be dependent upon the molecular form of Se (Finley et al.,2000;Wagner et al.,2000;Finley and Davis,2001).Based upon available data,Taylor et al.
