@@Due to its essentiality,deficiency,and toxicity amount of selenium (Se) to living organisms is very narrow and the extensive use in industrial activities,Se has become an element of global environmental and health concern (Ellis et al.,2003;Sager 2006).Selenium can be either beneficial or toxic to animals,microorganisms,and humans,depending on the chemical form,the concentrations,and other environmental regulating variables (Shardendau et al.,2003). The prominent factor determining the fate of Se in the environment is its oxidation state and related water solubility.Inorganic alkali selenite (IV) and selenate (VI) are soluble in water (Weast 1988) and therefore more bioavailable.Both chemical species can be easily taken up by plants (Banuelos and Lin,2005;Banuelos et al.,2005).It is necessary to study the plant Se uptake and high Se-containing vegetation owing to Se entering the food chains of people and animals through cereals,vegetables and feeds.Different plants show remarkable differences in se accumulation (Miguel et al.,2008). The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different levels of selenate or selenite treatment on the uptake and distribution of Se in pakchoi and its translocation in soil-plant systems.
