The reaction kinetics of ethyl methyl sulfide (CH_3CH_2-S-CH_3), a simulant for the chemical warfare agent HD, were studied at high temperature under highly diluted pyrolysis and oxidation conditions in a turbulent flow reactor. Destruction efficiencies of 50% and 99% were observed for pyrolysis and oxidation experiments, respectively, at 740 °C with a residence time of 0.06 second. For pyrolysis, ethylene, ethane, and methane were detected at significant levels. In addition to these species, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and formaldehyde were detected in the oxidation experiments. Possible initial reactions and production routes for important species in the experiments are discussed.
