Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Characteristics ofOlder Mexican American Adults

This paper reports characteristics of activities of daily living (ADL) of older Mexican American adults. Twohundred and fifty free-living older Mexican American adults (125 men and 125 women, aged 65 to 98 years old)were interviewed in person for this study. The Duke University Older Americans and Resources and Services(OARS) Multidimensional questionnaire was used for the assessment of the ADL levels. Study participants reportedtheir levels of difficulty in performing instrumental and physical activities of daily living. Older Mexican Americanadults report significant difficulty with daily living activities including ability to get to places out of walkingdistance, shopping for groceries, household activities including cleaning, taking their own medicine, ability to eat ontheir own, ability to dress and undress themselves, grooming activities, ability to get in and out of bed, and ability toget to the bathroom on time.
