Potential of Finely Milled Powder of Kenaf Core as a Binder

In order to investigate the potential of lignocellulosic materials as a binder, three-ply plywoods from Sugi veneer were manufactured with Kenaf core powder as alternative to synthetic adhesives by hot-pressing under various conditions. Then bonding strength of plywoods was measured in dry and wet conditions according to JAS for plywood. Furthermore Sugi powder was also used to compare the suitability as a binder with Kenaf core. As a result, excellent bondability was obtained from plywoods with fine powder (average grain size of 10μm). In addition, water-resistant properties of plywoods manufactured with Sugi powder was better than that of plywoods manufactured with Kenaf core powder, and plywoods manufactured Sugi powder met the requirement for plywood by JAS in the best hot-pressing condition. It is recognized that it is necessary for manufacturing plywoods with Kenaf core powder to improve water-resistant properties.
