Comparison of Machine Grading Methods for Canadian Hemlock

British Columbia coastal lumber manufacturers are investigating machine grading systems suitable for mechanically grading Japanese Post and Beam and 2×4 dimension lumber products. This study investigates longitudinal stress wave systems (MiCROTEC Stress Grader and Brookhuis Timber Grader MTG) that are able to grade the wide range of timber sizes used in Japanese P&B construction. MiCROTEC and MTG modulus of elasticity (MOE) results are compared to the Metriguard Model E 340 transverse vibration MOE and a static flatwise MOE. The relative performance of these systems for predicting MOE and bending strength (MOR) is reported.
