The method involves measuring an optical density of a sample for different wavelengths of a wavelength range in a near infrared. A spectral quotient is determined from the measured density for different wavelengths and for the sample having chemical compounds. An extended spectral quotient is calculated for the sample on a part of the range from the determined quotient. The calculated extended spectral quotient is compared with an extended spectral quotient corresponding to the compounds and recorded in a database. A property of the sample is determined based on the comparison result. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for estimating the property of a sample.
