Bridge across Rena River - 'World's strongest timber bridge'

The bridge across the Rena River was built in 2005. It is part of the road network within a Norwegian military training facility. The two lane timber truss bridge is 158 m long. It is designed to carry the load of a heavy military vehicle convoy in one lane and full traffic load in the other lane, as well as the weight of a 310 mm thick concrete deck. This gives a design load significantly higher than for ordinary two lane road bridges. We are not aware of any other timber bridges designed for these load conditions, thus we believe it is the "World's strongest timber bridge".The project has proven that modern timber technology has made it possible to construct structural timber systems capable of handling very high forces.
