The effect of various growth parameters on the morphology of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) synthesized on fused silica substrates using a nickel thin-film catalyst has been investigated. Well-formed CNF layers up to five micron thickness have been synthesized using ethylene as the carbon source. The CNF layer thickness increases with increasing growth time, whereas the diameter does not vary significantly. The CNF layers exhibited good and firm mechanical attachment of the CNF layer to the substrate. Controlled CNF synthesis on the flat surfaces can be achieved by fine tuning the combination of various parameters such as growth time, concentration of C-source gas, addition of hydrogen and total flow rate of the gas mixture
