MANAGING CHANGE - PRA ROLLOUT AT DRESDEN NUCLEAR STATION

This presentation delves into the rollout of an updated PRA model at an operating Nuclear Plant. Many station programs are now risk informed and are affected by the PRA update. Using a Change Management Planning template, the Exelon fleet has now established a standardized rollout process. The presentation will discuss the challenges of the Dresden PRA rollout. This rollout was made even more challenging when a modeling error was identified during the rollout process. The presentation will describe how this setback was addressed as well as other lessons learned. Future rollouts will benefit from a standard Change Management template, as well as other lessons learned from this effort. It should be noted that a PRA rollout includes updating applications used to risk inform many programs. These Programs include the Air and Motor Operated Valve (AOV and MOV) maintenance programs, the Maintenance Rule program and the pipe inspection programs amongst others. In addition communication and training are required to assure activities are carried out with the proper risk awareness. Utility personnel interested in maintaining control of their PRA update and rollout process will gain insights from this presentation. Personnel wishing to gain a better appreciation of how plant operations and maintenance are impacted by PRA insights will benefit as well. PRA communications and training can be used to enhance a station's safety culture. New plant personnel will also become more aware of the commitments and resources needed to keep their plants risk informed.
