Balancing Adhesion and Slip Properties in Aqueous Heat Seal Coatings

The goal of this work was to create water based heat seal coatings that exhibit good processing characteristics and are acceptable for food contact applications. This presentation describes the process by which we developed formulations that maximize substrate adhesion, ultimate seal strength and hot tack properties, while simultaneously contributing slip behavior so that the web unwinds and runs smoothly on package filling machines. This concept is intended to help converters to down gauge their structures by using less dry bulk resin to deliver seal and slip performance as compared to extruded heat seal coatings.
