The shock test severity of the Mil-S-901 lightweight machine is compared with the droptests outlined by the new proposed ANSI National Standard for equipment in a RuggedShock Environment. Shock spectra for a resiliently mounted notebook computer arereported for the lower five ANSI drop test levels and compared to the spectra for thelightweight machine hammer drop heights of 12”, 36” and 60”. The resilient mountingsystem in the drop test series bottomed out, while it did not during the Mil-S-901 tests. Itis concluded that while the drop test shock environment may not be representative ofunderwater explosions, it can provide a very severe ruggedness benchmark.
