Development of Halite Test Methodology Inhibitors and Field Application

The inhibition of halite mineral scale in oil and gas production is notoriously difficult. High concentrations of halite inhibitors have always provided limited inhibition performance. In addition, it is extremely difficult to test the halite formation and inhibition in the laboratory. In this paper, the dynamic halite loop has been developed to test the performance of halite formation and inhibition. Compared with the traditional static jar test, dynamic halite loop tests are more representative of halite formation under field conditions and also showed good reproducibility. The halite formed in neat sodium chloride water and synthetic field water have been tested. The effect of calcium in the field water on halite inhibitor evaluation is discussed in detail based on lab tests and modeling. Several new halite inhibitors have been developed and show good performance on inhibition. Field application will be provided and mechanism of halite inhibition will be approached. The morphology of halite inhibitors will also be discussed. This paper will give a comprehensive study of halite formation and inhibition, which includes halite prediction, development of test method and halite inhibitors, and field application.
