BioAmber's first commercial product is bio-succinic acid. Polypropylene succinate (PPS) and polybutylene succinate (PBS) polyester polyols were easily synthesized at various molecular weights based on BioAmber's bio succinic acid with 1,4-butanediol or 1,3-propanediol, both available from renewable sources. These polyester polyols are used in a variety of polyurethane applications including coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers. Thermal characterization showed PPS polyols with glass transition temperatures ranging from -40 °C to -35 °C. PBS polyols showed melting points from 103 °C tol 14 °C. These polyols will be reacted with diisocyanates, chain extended with diols or diamines and compared to adipic acid polyester polyols. This work describes the synthesis and characterization of polyester polyols containing up to 100% renewable carbon confirming bio based succinic acid can be used as a replacement for petroleum adipic acid.
