Elastomeric Revetments – An Innovative Solution for Coastal Protection and Erosion Control

Typically, revetments are made from dirt, concrete, asphalt mastic, large stone riprap, and stones held together with wire mesh. Each of these techniques has disadvantages in terms of durability, cost, and/or aesthetics. Revetments made with elastomer-coated stones are an innovative solution to many of these problems. Small stones coated with a natural oil based polyurethane elastomer are set in place and cure to form a monolithic, open-pore structure that is permeable to water. This new structure better dissipates the energy of wave impacts and provides a strong, stable structure that can withstand the forces of nature with no negative impact on the environment.
