With continued pressure on global energy resources, the use of CO_2 as a raw material can be very appealing. The use of waste CO_2 as a significant raw material can yield a product with an extremely low carbon footprint and unique performance characteristics. Novomer has developed technology for the production of polypropylene carbonate polyols which are copolymers of CO_2 and propylene oxide. These polyols have perfect functionality and a narrow molecular weight distribution. Flexible foams utilizing polypropylene carbonate polyols have generated interest because of their demonstrated load bearing and environmental resistance, along with their renewability. But the viscosity of these new polyols has been an impediment to their adoption. Methods to reduce viscosity and improve compatibility are demonstrated along with the performance impact on flexible foams.
