A Study of the Laundry Services at Central Texas Medical Center

Managers at the Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) and a professor at the Ingram School agreed to studyprocess improvement and cost optimization alternatives for the hospital laundry service. Undergraduate studentscarried out the study. Linen demand at each department was estimated and compared to the actual consumption.Next, two linear programming models were created to find the optimal cost and the optimal combination ofresources needed if washing the linen demand and if washing the linen consumed. The estimated annual savingsfrom washing the linen demand against washing the linen consumed is about $22,000.
