Central Materiel Services at Madigan Army Medical Center: A Case Study

A case study of the Central Materiel Services department at Madigan Army MedicalCenter was conducted in three phases to establish inventory levels of equipment located throughout the clinical areas of the hospital, to determine stockage levels of the most commonly used surgical instrument sets, and to conduct a pilot study showing the efficacy of an inventory management system using the Basic Laparotomy set as a study group. The clinical inventory identified a total of 779 separate lines of equipment, for a total of 4,581 instruments, sets, or other equipment. Eighty instrument sets were identified which represented 80% of the demand for sets within the hospital, and stockage levels to meet a 97% and a 99% demand satisfaction rate were computed and compared to actual inventory. Results from the pilot study showed significant differences between actual usage rates of instruments and stocked levels, but the sample size was too small to make recommendations for instrument stockage levels within the Basic Laparotomy set.
