Hydraulic geometry of alluvial river is of fundamental importance in river training, channel desiging and river managing. The alluvial river width is a focalization and difficulty in academe. There are a lot of different viewpoints of Chinese and foreign researchers. Existing knowledge is reviewed, and it's advantage and disadvantage were pointed in this study. And then our new research was demonstrated. The alluvial equilibrium river width is correlated with discharge, sediment concentration, and especially the longitudinal slope. The plane shape is also influenced by discharge, sediment contraction and slope. The empirical equation about equilibrium hydraulic geometry and plane shape are obtained in this study by the simple physical model.
