Starch treatment with monocholoroacetate generated Carboxymethyl derivatives which can be obtained as sodium or protonated forms by controlling the final pH of washing media. The protonated carboxymethyl derivative exhibited better gastro-resistance compared to its sodium salt and both excipients afforded total gastric protection of drugs when formulated as dry-coated dosages.
