Synthetic hydrogel mimics of the extracellular matrix (ECM) were created by a homogenizing interpolyelectrolyte complex/covalent conjugation technique through crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and calcium ions. The results showed that cross-linking improved the stability of prepared Chito-Hep AECMs in physiological buffer solution (PBS). The Chito-Hep composite AECMs appeared promoted binding efficiency for basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). The releases of bFGF from the Chito-Hep composite AECMs were sustatinable, depending on the cross-linking mode for the preparation of these composite AECMs. These results suggest that the Chito-Hep composite AECMs fabricated in this study may be a promising approach for tissue-engineering application.
