Alcohol influence on drug release - concept for rugged formulations

A formulation concept to provide oral controlled release formulations showing rugged behavior in alcohol water mixtures was developed. Example formulations using Diltiazem HCl and Metoprolol succinate as model drugs were investigated in various hydro alcoholic media. Rugged characteristics were demonstrated in alcohol concentrations up to 40% (v/v).
