ZONE OF ALKALI/AGGREGATE REACTION IN CARTERS REREGULATIONDAM, NORTH GEORGIA

A visual inspection of the dam, petrographic reports, and testing of concrete cores, all indicate the presence of a zone of alkali/aggregate reaction (AAR) in the Carters reregulation dam. The AAR, however, has not equally affected all concrete lifts in the structure. Relevant data concerning the construction of the Carters Project was obtained from many different Corps of Engineer offices. Concrete lift placement dates, contained on concrete placement cards on file at the Project were the "Rosetta Stone" used to interpret the data and define the location of the reactive zone within the structure.
