An Analytic Study on Weather Parameters Related to Restricted Visibility Due to Heavy Fog at Geiyo District in Seto Inland Sea

It is very important for ship operators to maintain sufficient visibility for navigation. However, heavy fog sometimes results in the cancellation of navigation or marine accidents. Although this is one of the most serious problems, detailed studies of weather conditions that cause such problems have not been conducted. The focus of this study is on the restricted visibility within the Geiyo district of the Seto Inland Sea. A new observation system to measure the air and water temperature, humidity, air pressure, and tide level has been developed. The variation of these parameters is researched in detail when the visibility deteriorates. Relational analysis among these parameters is also conducted. Finally, new findings about the appearance of heavy fog resulting from the analysis of the data are reported.
