The primary objective in any dry gas seal design is safe operation throughout all running conditions. Today, powerful analysis tools are available to calculate seal performance data, e.g. leakage rates, gas film thickness, taper etc., considering the stro strongly ngly coupled physical effects of fluid dynamics, structural mechanics and thermodynamics. A substantial increase of calculation efficiency is achieved by an extensive automation of the basic analysis procedure. The largely automated design procedure presented implies slow roll analysis, seal performance analysis over the entire operating range, statistical design approaches and mathematical design optimization. In particular, the complete picture of the seal performance, e.g. leakage rates, gas film thick thickness, ness, taper etc. over the entire operating range provides comprehensive insight into the seal behaviour eventually leading to a sound and reliable seal design.
